The Cross of Jesus
What happened at the cross of Jesus that we could see
He was nailed to that wooden cross.
He had already endured the whipping post of 40 lashes with a Roman cat-of-nine tails.
This was a whip with nine thongs at the end of the whip, each thong being weighted with a lead pellet for impact.
His body had been torn by this whipping.
So when He was nailed to that cross, the bare wood on his torn open back would have caused even more bleeding and pain.
Don't forget the crown of thorns that was pushed down into His scalp by the mockers.
That was a terrible source of pain. Just imagine it for a moment.
Pain in His head, back, hands, and feet.
Nailed to the cross, unable to move.
Sin coming upon Him from all time of all the world. The curse of all being placed upon Him.
He would have to push up from His nailed feet to take a deep breath. That effort would further rip His back on the cross.
His lungs would fill with fluid from the pain and bleeding, causing Him to have great effort to breath.
A nail to His right hand, a nail to His left hand, and a nail through the feet.
Finally, after He gave up the ghost, and committed Himself unto God, they drove a spear into His side, just to make sure He was dead.
