And Jesus began His preaching saying, Repent for the kingdom of God is at hand.
Later we read, "except ye repent, ye cannot enter into the kingdom of heaven."
And another strong explanation given says that in the same way that Moses
lifted up the serpent in the desert, so that all who looked upon it might be healed,
so must Jesus be lifted up.
See Numbers 21:9 and John 3:14 I believe the comparison here is to say that as people see what hurt them, what bit them, what poisoned them, ie see the sin in their life for what it is, then they can repent and be healed.
