Increase the blessing with increased knowledge and understanding of ThanksGiving Day.
The giving of thanks with a grateful heart is a good thing.
Christians give thanks to God Almighty who created us and who also cares for us.
Believing He is the One who provides our blessings of strength for life, we are grateful to Him.
The founding fathers of this nation knew to be grateful to Almighty God.
We can learn much from them to teach our children today.
Historic examples given here,
General of the Continental Army, George Washington
America's first Schoolmaster, Noah Webster.
Their understandings of giving thanks to God came from what they believed to be holy scripture,
and I agree with them. Let's see a little scripture background for what these men did and said.
It is easy to look up the word thanksgiving in a concordance. You can do that anytime.
Here are some less obvious scriptures that give light on the understanding of thanksgiving.
Colossians 1:21 tells us God has reconciled all things to Himself and therefore to His eternal
loving plan through Jesus Christ at the cross. Who is thankful for knowing that because of
Jesus Christ and Him crucified, all things work together for good to those who believe?
Those who believe He helps us in all our situations, (Colossians 1:21 and Romans 8:28)
also know it is good to acknowledge His lovingkindnesses toward us (Ephesians 3:16)
The opposite of thanksgiving is murmuring, griping and complaining.
We can either be thankful for our lives or we can gripe.
Things work better when we are thankful. (Numbers 14:28)
Some people just ignore God. They neither gripe nor give thanks.
This in-between place is to just assume and presume.
They act like there is no God. They make no reference to Him.
Many people just go on their merry way, taking life for granted.
They do not acknowledge God to thank Him for His many blessings and they do not complain to Him.
They ignore or deny Him, thus denying the honor due to Him.
Some people thank the stars. You've heard the expression, "Thank my luck stars!".
Others thank many different things in their life which they believe has helped them.
But we thank the living God, who is watching over the affairs of all men.
A thankful heart builds strength.
Thanksgiving builds a pathway for more blessings.
Giving of thanks is a way to acknowledge the glory, power and goodness of God in all His help toward us.
The giving of thanks prepares us for increased blessing from God.
It strengthens our inner man, as we yield to the Spirit of God in thankfulness.
As we acknowledge the riches of His glory to us, the circuit is completed in righteousness.
We have returned unto Him thanksgiving and praise and honor for the provision of life He has given us.
So the circuit being completed in righteousness, it can flow even more with His abundant blessings.
We grow stronger in His strength by acknowledging Him.
As we acknowledge His goodness, that same goodness is growing in us, by His Spirit. (Ephesians 3:16)
Failure to acknowledge God causes the mind to forget God.
When a man forgets God, that man turns further and further away from the truth. (Romans 1:21)
So we can choose to yield to His Spirit in giving thanks by which we are strengthened: or can choose to resist Him. (See Deuteronomy 30 especially verse 19).
The man who ignores God or complains is making himself weaker.
Thanksgiving is a way of being in agreement with God that He has done good things for us
and increases our ability to receive more blessings,
while murmuring goes contrary to the spirit of God.
Murmuring, cursing, and ignoring God are three ways of weaving
a spiritual spider web that attracts curses. Psalm 109:17,18.
George Washington First General of the Continental Army
American was built by men who believed in God through His Son Jesus Christ.
Commander in chief, George Washington knew the blessedness of giving thanks unto God.
He called his troops together to ask the blessing of the Almighty on their ways and means of defence.
Part of an official order of the day given out to his troops prior to battle with a larger British force in 1775 is quoted from an 1883 history book:
"The General requires and expects of all officers not engaged on actual duty,
a punctual attendance on divine service, to implore the blessings of Heaven
upon the means used for our safety and defence."
With fourteen thousand troops, General Washington defeated
three Generals who had thirty-two thousand British troops and hired mercenaries.
After victory, General Washington called his troops to assembly for the purpose of
giving thanks to God who had been faithful to bless them.
"
He ordered that divine services should be performed in all the brigades the next day,and that soldiers should, 'universally attend, with that seriousness of deportment
and gratitude of heart which the recognition of such reiterated and astonishing
interpositions of Providence demand of us."
"Congress was transported with joy.
It decreed that thanks should be given to Rochambeau and De Grasse,
and that a column should be raised at Yorktown, commemorative of the alliance of France
and the United States, and of the victory of their arms,
and it appointed a day of thanksgiving and prayer to God for His signal interposition. "

Scroll down for Noah Webster prayer of Thanksgiving.
Noah Webster included a prayer of thanksgiving to Almighty God
in the dictionary that he published with many scriptures.
The preface to Webster's greatest work,
with pronouncing vocabularies of Scripture,...."
finishes with thanksgiving and praise to Almighty God.who during the preparation of this work,
has sustained a feeble constitution (sustained his health), amist obstacles and toils,
disappointments, infirmities, and depression;
who has borne me and my manuscripts in safety across the Atlantic;
and given me strength and resolution to bring the work to a close,
I would present the tribute of my most grateful acknowledgments.
And if the talent which He entrusted to my care,
has not been put to the most profitable use in His service,
I hope it has not been 'kept laid up in a napkin',
and that any mis-application of it might be graciously forgiven."
New Haven, Noah Webster
