It seems to me that students are not being given a love for truth. Instead they are being placated with easy material. When I say easy, the image jumps to mind of a complex process that has been disected and digitized so the students can memorize a single part without understanding its connection to the whole.
I know a top student sophmore at Rider who didn't know what A.C. and D.C. current meant. That seems sad expecially when you consider all the trivia that student has learned. Oh, well, what can you expect from a school with a cartoon character for its mascot. That pretty well explains the cartoon ie laughable, results.
Consider the differences between understanding a process and just memorizing its various parts temporarily to pass a quizz. I have come to recognize a pattern. That pattern distinquishes between analogue teaching and digitized teaching. Digitized teaching stinks. Analogue teaching requires the student to see the whole picture. Digitized gives him a passing grade for just memorizing isolated facts.
The honors biology test given in Spring of 1997 at Rider H.S. was a joke. Yet it was used to say the students had all done so well. What a crime. To allow such a test to justify such praise by state guidelines. Such a system is a farce and a fraud on the parents who are paying for the education of their children.
Look at the plane geometry books. With all the years since Sputnik, plane geometry is one course you would expect to have books with thorough explanations. But the one I saw at Rider was grossly incomplete. It was filled with color. It was attractive. At first sight it looked well organized. It was just incomplete, inadequate, and a clear example of commercialism in our education system.
The American history book has many omissions of important material. It is clearly biased to the brave new world way of looking at history. And it is slanted to indoctrinate students to favor liberalism.
What's wrong? First things are not being taught first. Trivia is occupying too much space and time in the classrooms. Often, erroneous things are being taught. Slanted and biased by liberal educators to bring up generations of shallow thinking, government dependent children. And this is passing for education because parents are not educated enough to recognize what's happening.
Fun is being taught as the main motivator and justification for nearly anything. If it doesn't feel good, if the student doesn't like it immediately, he isn't expected to do it. Just like tv commercials, education is being reduced to sound-bite mentality. Short choppy thoughts. Not deep connected thoughts. That's what's passing for education excellence today. Thank you Superintendents who care more about the people than about the system. Show parents the difference between a shallow learning and deep learning. Isolated facts verses connected understanding gives a great difference in how people deal with the world. I want to find a superintendent who does care more about the parents than about the system. But so long as they get paid by the system, it is natural for them to care more about the system. Parents, you have lost control of your children's education. Did you know that?
